Chapter 1 - Introduction
F/X-Chat USED to be one of the most popular split-screen chat systems
for QuickBBS. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular split-screen chat
systems available for ANY BBS software. It has been tested and/or should
work on any of the following softwares:
QuickBBS Remote Access Opus CBCS PC-Board
Boston BBS Maximus CBCS RBBS-PC SuperBBS
It may also work on other softwares such as Telegard, TAG, or WWIV, but
has not yet been tested.
Chapter 2 - Loading And Running
To properly run F/X-Chat, you must execute it with the calling line
as follows:
FX-CHAT [parameters]
Parameters:
/C Loads up the configuration editing mode.
/An Specifies ANSI status (n:0=Off,1=On,2=Avatar).
/Vn Specifies Avatar 0+ status (n:0=Off,1=On).
/Pn Specifies port number (n:1=Com1,2=Com2...).
/Snnnnn Specifies modem speed (nnnnn:300,1200,2400...).
/L Specifies local test mode.
/B Bypasses reason prompt and paging system.
/Dnnnnnnn Defines the PATH and FILENAME that will be
used to locate the include file (specified by the
/1 and /2 switches) This MUST be placed BEFORE /1
and /2.
/1 Specifies a PCBOARD.SYS format file to be read.
/2 Specifies a DORINFO.DEF format file to be read.
/Nnnnnnn! Specifies the User's Name
(Names Can Be Any Amount Of Words Up To 35 Chars
And Be Terminated With A ! If Not The Last
Parameter Passed)
These parameters can be placed in any order on the command line and
are all optional. It is suggested that the com port, baud rate, and user
name be passed so that the system will work properly.
Here are a few examples of calling F/X-Chat with different softwares.

---------------------------------------
FX-CHAT.EXE /P1 /S*B /G*G /N*F *L!

With RBBS-PC (With DORINFO1.DEF In C:\RBBS)
-------------------------------------------
FX-CHAT.EXE /DC:\RBBS\DORINFO1.DEF /2
Chapter 3 - Commands Used While On-Line
The key-commands for both the SysOp and User are basically the same.
They are as follows:
Ctrl-Y - Clears the current line being input by the SysOp or User.
Ctrl-R - Redraw the screen (In case of line-noise or other problems)
Ctrl-W - Clear the window (Either SysOp's or User's) and return the
cursor to coordinates 1,1 of that window.
Other than these keys, all other keys are treated as keyboard input
and will be echoed to the display screen. The SysOp has a few local
key-commands that he can use as well. These are:
Ctrl-P - Toggles plug-in mode. This will allow the SysOp to type
on the user's side of the screen (Ctrl-P to toggle back).
Alt-H - Click! Hangs up on the user and returns to the BBS.
Alt-U - Prompts the SysOp for a file name to be uploaded. When
specified, F/X-Chat will send a text, ANSI, or Avatar 0+
file to the user. These files can contain the basic
QuickBBS style control characters. Ctrl-F displays the
user's name and Ctrl-K displays the SysOp's name.
Alt-L - Toggles the ASCII capture log of the Chat session. The
actual contents of which are held in the file specified
under Log File in the configuration file.
Alt-C - Edits the configuration of the program.
Alt-S - Shells to DOS and allow the SysOp to do whatever he/she
may want to do. To return to the Chat program, the
SysOp must type "EXIT" at the DOS prompt.
Esc - This will exit the Chat program and return the user to
the BBS.
Chapter 4 - Editing The Configuration
To modify F/X-Chat's configuration, invoke F/X-Chat with the /C
parameter. This will display a window with the current configuration
settings. You can toggle up and down between the fields with the up
and down arrow keys. To change a boolean (Yes/No) value, hit [Space] at
that field, and to edit a color value, hit [Enter] on that field.
To exit the editing and save the configuration, at any time, press the
[Esc] key.
FX-CHAT.DEF is no longer used by F/X-Chat as the configuration editing
mode handles everything.
Chapter 5 - Files Used By F/X-Chat
F/X-Chat will now display .ASC/.ANS/.AVT files instead of prompts.
The files displayed by F/X-Chat follow:
PAGE.??? Displayed when the user is paging.
PAGENOAV.??? Displayed if SysOp does not answer page.
PAGEABRT.??? Displayed if SysOp aborts the page.
PAGETIME.??? Displayed if User pages outside of paging hours.
Demonstration files are included in the ZIP package.
F/X-Chat also reads in a Remote Access PAGE type file (the name of
the file can be modified in the configuration) to play instead of the
default paging tones. A demo music file is included in the ZIP package.
F/X-Chat writes to CHAT.LOG when conversation logging is activated.
F/X-Chat writes to a log file (in QuickBBS format) of which the name
can be modified in the configuration.
Chapter 6 - Acknowledgments
I'd like to acknowledge the past help of Keith La Riviere, Bob Shaw,
and Rob Church in the testing and debugging of this program. I also
would like to personally thank Rosa Bravo, Dale Barnes, Scott Steeves,
And Steve Woodward for their help and support.
F/X-Chat has grown over the past few years into one of the best
split-screen chat programs available world-wide, pretty good for a
street-punk from Boston.
